Ready or NOT?
Five days to go and my last day at Peak rolled around. For the very first day I didn’t ride my bike. Inclement weather is my excuse - I didn’t want to get wet - then workout. I’m starting to feel a bit cautious - I couldn’t imagine getting sniffles this late in the game.
In fact, it would have been a perfect pre-run for the trip - Brisbane (usually a belting sunny 30 deegree C with 90% humidity) threw up an anolmoly of a day - high 21 low 11 drizzling. exactly the weather we’re headed for in NZ. A not so subtle reminder of the conditions we’re going to experience for the next three weeks.
It’s only a three minute ride to the gym - two if I go fast. Five minute drive by the time I get out the driveway, find a carpark and walk to the gym. You see where I’m going here.
Life is better by bike.
But back to the real question. Ready or not? Has the gym program prepared for this trip? In a nutshell - yes. Despite feeling like I’ve been patched up just enough to make it to the starting line - a little tumble off my bike amongst the jacaranda blooms and a niggling long term shoulder injury weren’t helping my Quads like Katie’s quest.
Here’s what shone through for me in this fifteen weeks - all adding up to the be the best prepared me.
A little a lot - seemingly benign floor exercises with rubber bands work a treat - who would have thought.
1% better than yesterday - the knowledge that I am better prepared today than I would be without doing anything.
Keep on keeping on - I’m tucking this one in the memory bank for when we’re weary and perhaps a little wet and uncomfortable.
My gym group are great - an unusual collection but funnily enough we all ride bikes.
I know, it doesn’t sound hugely inspirational does it. Maybe that’s why it worked so well for me. A consistent effort with incremental gains, some encouraging feedback from my regular riding stats and all fitting within the regular rhythm of family life.
And the answer to the million dollar question - Do I have Quads like Katie’s?
Sadly - no. She’s a star soccer player. It was never going to happen - but I gave it a red hot shot!
